EARLY MECHANICAL COUNTING/CALCULATING DEVICES Abacus Slide rule   EARLY ELECTRO-MECHANICAL COUNTING DEVICES John Napier bone Blaize Pascal machine Gottfried Leitbnitz machine Joseph Jacquard Loom Charles Babbage analytical machine   EARLY ELECTRONIC COUNTING DEVICES Herman Hollerith punch card John Von Neumann machine   Man has put in every effort to have better methods of calculations. As a result of man’s search for fast and accurate calculating devices, the computer was developed. Essentially, there are three kinds of calculating devices: manual, mechanical and automatic.   ABACUS The first calculating device was probably Abacus. The Chinese invented it. It is still in use in some countries because of its simple operation. It is made up of a frame divided into two parts by a horizontal bar and vertical threads. Each thread contains some beads. It was used to calculate simple addition and subtraction.   NAPIER’S BONE The need for a better calculating device… Read More »HISTORY OF COMPUTING

HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF COMPUTING DEVICES The origin of computers dates back to when our fore fathers used their early calculating devices to count. For example Counting with fingers and toes: calculations were done by our fore fathers with their toes and fingers before the invention of computers. Counting with pebbles: when counting with fingers became inadequate the early men later introduced pebbles (stone) to count the number of flocks they had. Prior to the invention of alternative means for counting, fingers ,toes ,stones and beads were used in counting in the performance of simple arithmetic calculations such as additions and subtractions etc. This simple way of counting was a difficult to use for large numbers. This early method was in place till the invention of Abacus device.   ABACUS DEVICE The Abacus device was invented to replace the manual method (finger/ stone) of counting. The Abacus dates as far back… Read More »HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF COMPUTING DEVICES

Mechanical Counting and Calculating Devices As a result of the disadvantages of the early counting devices, more advanced mechanical counting and calculating devices were invented. Some of these devices are; Abacus (Chinese) Napier’s Bone (John Napier) Slide Rule (William Oughtred)   THE ABACUS The Abacus is made up of beads threaded on iron rods. The iron rods are fixed to a rectangular wooden frame. It is used for addition and subtraction only. It could not carry out complex mathematics.  The Abacus was early used for arithmetic tasks, it was developed in China about 5000 years ago. It was successful that its use spread from china to many other countries. NAPIER’S BONE After the Abacus, the next significant development was the Napier’s Bone made by John Napier in the year 1617. John Napier was a mathematician, physicist, and astronomer from Scotland. His most important achievement was the discoverery of logarithms. He also made the… Read More »MECHANICAL COUNTING AND CALCULATING DEVICES
