Les articles partitifs ( The partitive articles )

The definite article

 

In English, there is only oe form of the definite article: The. In French, there are three forms, depending on the gender and number of the noun following he article

_____ with a masculine singular noun: le

_____ with a feminine singular

_____   with a plural noun (masculine or feminine): Les

Masculin                              le garcon

feminin                                la fille

pluriel                   les etudiants

 

Note: le and la both change to l’ before a vowel or a silent h

Masculine                           feminin

Before vowel: l’etudiant                               l’ecole

The student                       the school

Before silent h: l’homme                              l’ecole

The man                         the hostess

Pronounciation: The s of les is pronounced z when the noun following it begins with a vowel or a silent h forms with the preposition a ( to, at) When the definite article is used with a, the following spelling changes take place.

 

Masculin Feminin
Singulier     a+le = au a+la = a la
Pluriel          a+les = aux a +les = aux

 

A l’devant les noms au singulier qui commencent par une voyelle ou le ‘h’

 

  1. A + le = au
  2. Je vais au cinema
  3. Elle va au marche
  4. Vous allez au restaurant
  5. Il va au supermarche
  6. Tu vas au stade.

 

  1. A + la = a la
  2. Nous allons a la banque
  3. Je vais a la bibliotheque
  4. Vous allez a la poste
  5. Elle va a la maison
  6. Je travailles a la boucherie

 

  1. A + la becomes a l’ when the next words begins with a vowel or a silent h.
  2. Je vais a l’eglise
  3. Elle va a l’hopital
  4. Nous allons a l’aeroport
  5. Vous allez a l’hotel

 

  1. A + les = aux (masculine / feminin pluriel)
  2. Repondez aux question s’il vous plait
  3. Ma mere parle aux enfants
  4. La directrice parle aux etudiants.
  5. Le docteur rend visite aux hopitaux
  6. Nous allons aux etats – unis d’Amerique par l’avion

 

Note: The x of aux is pronounced z when the next word begins with a silent h.

 

Forms with the prepositions de (of, from) when the definite article is used with de, the following spelling changes takes places.

Masculin Feminine
Singulier De + le = du De la/de l’
Pluriel De + les = des des

 

Notez: de l’devant les mots qui commencement par une voyelle et h muet, au singulier

  2. Mon voiture vient du marche
  3. Nous venons du garage
  4. Mon pere vient du supermache
  5. Je viens du cinema
  6. Il vient du state.

 

  1. De + la = de la
  2. Elle vient de la banque
  3. Je viens de la poste
  4. Okoh vient de la bibliotheque
  5. Musa vient de la mosque
  6. Il vient de la boulangerie

  2. Je viens de l’aeroport
  3. Elle vient de l’ecole
  4. Nous venons de l’eglise
  5. Mon pere vient de l’hopital
  6. Ma soeur vient de l’hotel

 

  1. De + Les = des
  2. Je viens des pays francophone
  3. Tu viens des pays Anglophone,
  4. Les efants des pauvres sont intelligents
  5. Il vient des etats – unis
  6. Elle vient des pays europeens

 

Note:
