Computers can be classified based on the following criteria
Development of technology (by generation)
Principle of operation (by type)
Storage capacity or by configuration (by size)
Degree of versatility (by purpose)
Classification by types
Computers can be classified into three major types based on principles of operations.
The three types are
i) Digital Computer: These are computer that perform calculation and logical operations with quantities represented as digits in binary number system. They operate on digital data such as numbers which are referred to discrete values. Digital computers give more accurate and faster results. They are counting devices. Examples are digital clocks, mobile phones, calculations, microcomputers, etc.
What is Digitization of data?
Digitization is the process of converting analog information into a digital format. For example, scanning of analog source like printed photos or taped text, images or videos into computers for editing.
Digitizing is the primary way of storing images in a form suitable for transmission and computer processing whether scanned or captured using an image sensor equipped device such as digital camera.
Stages of Digitization
Digitization occurs in two parts or stages, which are:
Discretization: This is the reading of an analog signal at regular interval (frequency), sampling the value of the signal at the point. Each reading is called a sample.
Quantization: This is the rounding of sample to a fixed set of numbers (such as integers).

Data refers to raw facts yet to be processed. It is a fact, number or text that can be processed by a computer. Data has no meaning to the user unless processed to get meaningful information.

Data can be obtained by any one or more of the following methods.
Observation of people, activities or event
Face to face interviews
Test or examination scores, etc.

In every generation, the circuitry has become smaller and more advanced than the previous generation. Each generation of computer is characterized by a major technological development.
There are five generations of computer, which are
First generation (1940 – 1956)
Second generation (1956 – 1963)
Third generation (1964 – 1971)
Fourth generation (1971 – 1983)
Fifth generation (1983 – present and beyond)
